Welcome to Photoshop: Your Digital Darkroom

Think about a photograph you have taken or seen that you wished looked slightly different — maybe the background was too busy, the lighting too dark, or an unwanted object crept into the frame. Before digital tools existed, photographers had to reshoot the entire picture or spend hours in a chemical darkroom making careful physical adjustments. Today, software like Adobe Photoshop lets artists and designers make those changes in minutes — non-destructively, meaning the original image is never permanently damaged. Every blockbuster film poster, magazine cover, and app icon you have ever seen has almost certainly passed through Photoshop. The question is: how does it actually work?

**The Workspace at a Glance** When you open Photoshop, the screen is divided into several regions. The Menu Bar at the very top holds commands grouped by category (File, Edit, Image, Layer, and so on). Directly below it sits the Options Bar, which changes to show settings for whichever tool is currently active. On the left edge is the Toolbox — a narrow vertical strip of icons representing every editing tool. On the right side are Panels, small floating windows for adjusting colour, layers, history, and more. The large central area where your image actually appears is called the Canvas. **Understanding Layers** The single most important idea in Photoshop is the layer. Think of layers as transparent sheets of glass stacked on top of each other. You can paint on one sheet without touching the others. You can reorder the sheets, hide them, or throw one away entirely without destroying the rest of the image. This is what makes Photoshop editing non-destructive. For example, if you add text on its own layer and later dislike the font, you simply edit that layer alone — the original photo below remains untouched. Layers are managed in the Layers Panel, usually docked on the right side of the screen. **Five Essential Tools** 1. **Move Tool (V):** Lets you click and drag any layer to reposition it on the canvas. Press the keyboard shortcut V to activate it instantly. 2. **Brush Tool (B):** Works like a digital paintbrush. You set the size, hardness, and colour in the Options Bar, then paint directly onto the active layer. A soft-edged (low hardness) brush blends smoothly; a hard-edged brush gives crisp, sharp strokes. 3. **Eraser Tool (E):** Removes pixels from the active layer, making those areas transparent so the layer beneath shows through. Use it carefully — it permanently removes pixels unless you are working on a duplicate layer. 4. **Crop Tool (C):** Lets you draw a rectangle over the canvas and trim away everything outside it. Cropping changes the composition of an image — removing distractions and drawing the viewer's eye to the subject. 5. **Selection Tools — Rectangular Marquee (M) and Lasso (L):** These tools let you outline a specific region of the canvas. Only the selected area is affected by edits. The Rectangular Marquee selects perfect rectangles; the Lasso lets you draw a freehand shape around an irregular object.
