The Four Steps of Gallery Critique

When art critics — people who study and write about art — look at a painting or sculpture, they use a method called . This means looking carefully and sharing your thoughts in an organised way. You can do it too, using four steps. **Step 1 — :** Say what you can actually see. Name the colours, shapes, objects, and people. Do not guess what it means yet — just report what is there. For example: 'I can see a woman in a red dress standing near a window.' **Step 2 — :** Look at how the artist made choices. Did they use bright or dark colours? Are the lines smooth or jagged? Is everything in the picture busy and crowded, or calm and simple? These choices are called techniques — the skills and methods the artist used on purpose. **Step 3 — :** Now ask what the artwork might mean or what feeling it gives you. This is your chance to make a thoughtful guess. For example: 'The dark colours make me think the person feels lonely.' Different people can have different interpretations, and that is perfectly fine. **Step 4 — :** Share your opinion. Did you find the artwork interesting, confusing, beautiful, or strange? Most importantly, give a reason. Saying 'I like it because the colours feel energetic' is much stronger than just saying 'I like it.' Using these four steps turns a quick glance into a real conversation about art.
