How Relief Printing Works

is a way of making pictures by pressing a raised surface into ink, then onto paper or fabric. The word 'relief' means raised up — like a bump you can feel. Here is how it works, step by step: 1. Start with a flat block. Artists use materials such as wood, rubber, foam, or even a vegetable like a potato. 2. Cut or away the parts you do NOT want to print. The parts you leave raised will carry the ink. 3. Roll or dab ink evenly over the raised surface. The low (cut-away) parts stay clean — they will not print. 4. Press the block firmly onto paper. Lift it carefully and the raised pattern appears on the paper. 5. You can print the same block again and again to make repeated patterns. Artists make choices at every step: the shape they carve, the colour of ink they use, whether they overlap prints, and how hard they press. These choices change the finished look. Relief printing has been used for thousands of years. Woodblock printing was used in East Asia to print books and beautiful fabric designs. Today, artists still use relief printing to make posters, greetings cards, and fine art. A famous type of relief print is a — where artists carve into a flat piece of linoleum (a smooth, rubbery material). Linocuts make very crisp, clean lines.

Imagine an artist wants to print a leaf shape. She carves the leaf outline into a foam block, leaving the leaf shape raised. She rolls green ink over the foam.
