Patterns with Purpose: Islamic Geometric Art

Imagine you are walking into a grand old building. The walls, floors, and ceilings are covered in dazzling patterns — stars, hexagons, and interlocking flowers, all fitting together perfectly like a puzzle with no gaps. These patterns seem to go on forever! Have you ever noticed a pattern and wondered, 'How did someone design that?'

Islamic geometric art is a style of design that uses repeating mathematical shapes — like stars, polygons, and interlocking lines — to create beautiful, endless-looking patterns. This style became very well developed in the Islamic world from around the 8th century onwards. You can find it on mosques, palaces, textiles, ceramics, and manuscripts from places such as Morocco, Turkey, Iran, and Spain. Artists who created these patterns followed three big ideas: 1. REPETITION — One small shape or 'tile' is repeated many times to fill the whole surface. When you step back, the pattern looks huge and complex, but it started with just one simple unit. 2. SYMMETRY — The pattern looks the same if you flip it, rotate it, or reflect it. Symmetry gives the pattern a feeling of balance and harmony. 'Symmetry' means that two sides of a shape or pattern match each other exactly. 3. TESSELLATION — The shapes fit together with no gaps and no overlapping, like bathroom tiles but far more decorative. 'Tessellation' means shapes that fit together perfectly, leaving no empty spaces. Common shapes used include six-pointed stars, eight-pointed stars, hexagons, squares, and triangles. Artists used a compass (a tool for drawing circles) and a ruler to draw these shapes with great precision. 'Precision' means being extremely careful and exact. Because the patterns can tile outward in every direction without stopping, they give a feeling of infinity — the idea that something goes on forever. Many historians think this was meaningful to artists, representing ideas of the endless nature of the universe.
