Most people are surprised to find out that eyes sit almost exactly in the middle of the head — not near the top as we often think! Artists have studied faces for thousands of years, and they spotted this trick long ago. Today you are going to look really closely at your own face and draw what you actually see, not just what you think you see.

How to Draw a Self-Portrait

A is a drawing or painting of yourself, made by you. Artists use a mirror or a photograph to look carefully at their own face while they draw. Step 1 — Draw the head shape. Most heads are shaped like an oval, a bit like an egg. Draw a large oval in the middle of your paper. Step 2 — Find the middle line. Lightly draw a (a line going across) exactly halfway up the oval. This is where your eyes will go. Draw two almond shapes on this line, one on each side, with a gap in the middle for your nose. Step 3 — Place the nose and mouth. The nose sits roughly halfway between the eye line and the chin. The mouth sits about halfway between the nose and the chin. Add a simple shape for each. Step 4 — Look in your mirror. Check the real distances on your own face. Are your eyes closer together or further apart than you drew? Is your nose longer or shorter? Adjust your drawing to match what you really see. Step 5 — Add details. Look at the shape of your eyebrows, the size of your ears (ears line up roughly between the eyes and nose), and the style of your hair. Add these carefully. Step 6 — Add expression. What feeling does your face show today? A slight curve of the mouth can show happiness; straighter lips can look calm or serious.

Imagine you draw the eyes near the very top of your oval. When you hold up a mirror you notice your real eyes are much lower — almost halfway down your head. So you erase the eyes and redraw them on the halfway line. Now your portrait looks much more like a real face. This is why observing carefully before and during drawing is so important.
