What Is a Still Life?

A is an artwork that shows non-living things or objects that are not moving. Artists arrange these objects carefully before they draw or paint them. The word 'still' means not moving, and 'life' here means everyday objects taken from real life. Artists have made still lifes for over 400 years. Painters in the Netherlands in the 1600s became famous for detailed still lifes showing flowers, food, and household items. Today artists still choose this style because it lets them study shape, shadow, and colour without anything moving around! A good still life has three important features: 1. A strong — objects are grouped together thoughtfully, not scattered. Some are placed in front of others to add depth. This makes the picture feel three-dimensional. 2. Varied shapes and sizes — mixing a tall object with a round one and a flat one makes the arrangement more interesting to look at. 3. Light and shadow — a light source (like a window or lamp) shines on the objects from one side. One side looks bright and the other side is darker. This shadow is called , and it makes flat drawings look solid and real. A worked example: Imagine you place an apple, a glass bottle, and a book on a table. The bottle stands tall at the back. The apple sits in front of it, partly overlapping the book which lies flat. A lamp shines from the left. The left side of the bottle is bright. The right side is darker. Your eye travels across all three objects — that is a thoughtful still life arrangement!

An artist places three objects on a table: a tall glass bottle at the back, a round apple in the middle, and a flat open book in front. The apple overlaps the book slightly. A lamp on the left lights up the left sides of all the objects. The artist shades the right sides dark.
