Acrylic paint is one of the most popular paints used by artists today. It was invented in the 1950s and is loved because it is bright, strong, and dries quickly — usually within minutes to an hour. Acrylic paint is made from tiny particles of colour called , held together by a special glue called . When the paint is wet, the polymer is soft and stretchy. When it dries, it locks hard and becomes water-resistant — meaning water can no longer dissolve it. HOW IT IS DIFFERENT FROM WATERCOLOUR Watercolour paint is thin and see-through. Acrylic can be thick and fully solid, covering what is underneath it. This is called being . If you add lots of water to acrylics, they become thin and see-through like watercolour. This is one of acrylic paint's superpowers — you can change how it behaves by adding water. THINNING AND MIXING To thin acrylic paint, add a little water with a brush or dropper. A small amount makes it flow more easily. Too much water makes the colour weak and patchy. A good rule: add water slowly, a little at a time. You can always add more — you cannot take it away. When you mix two acrylic colours together on your , blend them well before putting them on paper or canvas. The colours you mix will look the same when dry, but they will be slightly darker because the wet polymer looks shiny and lighter.
