How to Add Detail with Watercolour

Adding details in watercolour is different from adding details with pencil or crayon. Watercolour is made of — tiny particles of colour — mixed with water. The more water you use, the lighter and softer the colour. The less water you use, the darker and sharper the colour. There are two main ways to add detail. **1. Fine-brush detailing** Choose a very thin brush — a size 0 or size 1 round brush works best. Dip it in paint and then dab most of the paint off on a piece of spare paper. Now your brush has just a little paint on it. You can draw thin, careful lines — like the veins on a leaf or the whiskers on a cat. Keep your hand steady by resting your little finger on the paper. **2. Dry-brush technique** The dry-brush technique means using a brush that has very little water on it. Load your brush with paint, then wipe it gently on a dry cloth or paper towel until it looks almost dry. When you drag this brush across the paper, it leaves broken, scratchy marks. This is perfect for making texture — things like fur, grass, rough wood, or feathers. **The golden rule: wait for it to dry!** If you paint a detail on top of a wet , the colours will into each other and the detail will disappear. Always wait for your background wash to dry completely before adding details on top. You can test this by touching the edge of the paint gently — if it feels cool or damp, wait a little longer.

Worked example

Imagine you are painting a cat. First, you paint a flat orange wash for the body and let it dry fully. Then you pick up your size 1 round brush, dip it in dark brown paint, and dab off most of the paint on spare paper. You draw thin curved lines across the body — these are the stripes. Next, you wipe your brush on a cloth until it is almost dry, pick up some pale yellow paint, and drag the brush lightly across the chest area. The broken marks look just like soft fur. Finally, you use the very tip of your fine brush to paint three or four long, straight whiskers coming out from the nose. Because the background was dry before you started, every detail stays sharp and clear.
