What is adding?

Adding means putting groups together. When we add, we find how many we have altogether. We use the plus sign to show adding: +

Adding small numbers

We can add numbers up to 5. Start with one number. Then count on the next number. Now you know the total!

Using your fingers

Your fingers are great for adding! Hold up fingers for the first number. Then hold up more for the second number. Count them all!

Adding in any order

You can add numbers in any order. 2 plus 3 is the same as 3 plus 2. Both equal 5!

    1. Start with 2.
    2. Add 1 more.
    3. Count: 1, 2, 3.
    4. The answer is 3!

  2. 2. What is 3 + 2?

    1. Start with 3.
    2. Add 2 more by counting on.
    3. Count: 4, 5.
    4. The answer is 5!

  3. 3. What is 1 + 1?

    1. Start with 1.
    2. Add 1 more.
    3. Now we have 2!
    4. The answer is 2.
