What is counting?

Counting means saying one number for each thing. We use counting to find out how many there are. We say the numbers in order: one, two, three and so on!

Counting things you can see

You can count toys, apples, or even your fingers! Touch each thing as you count. This helps you not miss any or count twice.

The last number is special

When you count, the last number tells you how many. If you count five buttons and say five last, there are five buttons altogether.

Counting to ten

You can count up to ten things. Ten is a really useful number to know. We have ten fingers to help us count!

Worked examples

  1. 1. Count the stars: ★ ★ ★ ★

    1. Point to each star as you count.
    2. Say: one, two, three, four.
    3. The last number is four, so there are four stars.

  2. 2. Count the balls: ⚽ ⚽ ⚽ ⚽ ⚽ ⚽ ⚽

    1. Touch each ball and count carefully.
    2. Say: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven.
    3. There are seven balls altogether.

  3. 3. Count the hearts: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

    1. Count each heart one at a time.
    2. Say the numbers up to ten.
    3. The last number is ten, so there are ten hearts.
