What does one more mean?

One more means we add one extra thing. If you have 3 apples and get one more, you have 4 apples. One more is always the next number when we count up.

What does one less mean?

One less means we take one thing away. If you have 5 sweets and eat one, you have 4 sweets left. One less is the number just before when we count.

Counting up and down

When we count up, we find one more. When we count back, we find one less. Try counting: 6, 7, 8. Now back: 8, 7, 6. You are finding one more and one less!

Using a number line

A number line helps us see the numbers in order. To find one more, we move one step right. To find one less, we move one step left. Very clever!

Worked examples

  1. 1. What is one more than 7?

    1. Start at 7.
    2. Count up one number.
    3. The next number is 8.
    4. So one more than 7 is 8.

  2. 2. What is one less than 10?

    1. Start at 10.
    2. Count back one number.
    3. The number before 10 is 9.
    4. So one less than 10 is 9.

  3. 3. What is one more than 14?

    1. Start at 14.
    2. Count forward: 15.
    3. One more than 14 is 15.
