What are times tables?
Times tables help us multiply numbers quickly. When you know your times tables, you can find answers without counting. For example, 3 times 4 means 3 groups of 4. That equals 12. Learning times tables up to 12 × 12 is like having a superpower for maths!
Patterns in times tables
Times tables have clever patterns. The 2 times table gives even numbers: 2, 4, 6, 8. The 5 times table always ends in 0 or 5. The 10 times table just adds a zero: 10, 20, 30. Spotting patterns makes learning easier and more fun!
Switching the numbers around
A brilliant trick: you can swap the numbers around! 4 × 7 is the same as 7 × 4. Both equal 28. This means you only need to learn half as many facts. If you know 3 × 8, you already know 8 × 3!
Tricky times tables
Some times tables need extra practice. The 6, 7, 8 and 9 times tables can be tricky. Break them into smaller steps. For 7 × 8, think: 7 × 5 = 35, then add 7 × 3 = 21. That gives 35 + 21 = 56!

Knowing times tables makes all of maths easier and faster. You use them for dividing, working with fractions, and solving problems. They help in everyday life too, like sharing sweets fairly or working out prices!
Worked examples
1. What is 6 × 7?
- Think of 6 groups of 7.
- Or use a pattern: 6 × 6 = 36, then add one more 6.
- 36 + 6 = 42.
- So 6 × 7 = 42.
2. What is 9 × 8?
- Use the finger trick or think: 9 × 8 = (10 × 8) - 8.
- 10 × 8 = 80.
- 80 - 8 = 72.
- So 9 × 8 = 72.
3. What is 12 × 5?
- 12 × 5 means 12 groups of 5.
- Think: 10 × 5 = 50, and 2 × 5 = 10.
- Add them: 50 + 10 = 60.
- So 12 × 5 = 60.
