Who Needs Who? How Living Things Depend on Each Other

Imagine you are stranded on an island with only grass growing on it. Could you survive by eating just grass? What if rabbits lived on the island too — would that help? Think about where the rabbit gets its energy, and where YOU would get yours. Everything you eat was once alive — and that living thing needed something else to survive too. That chain of needs is what this lesson is all about.

An ecosystem is a community of living things — plants, animals, fungi, and tiny organisms — all living together in the same place and depending on each other. All the energy in an ecosystem starts with the sun. Plants use sunlight to make their own food. This process is called photosynthesis. Because plants make their own food, we call them producers. Animals cannot make their own food. They must eat other living things to get energy. We call animals consumers. Some consumers eat only plants — like rabbits eating grass. Some eat other animals — like a fox eating a rabbit. The order in which energy passes from one living thing to the next is called a food chain. Here is a simple food chain from a meadow: Grass → Rabbit → Fox The grass uses sunlight to grow. The rabbit eats the grass and gets energy. The fox eats the rabbit and gets energy. Each arrow means 'is eaten by' or 'gives energy to'. Living things also depend on each other in other ways. Bees visit flowers to drink nectar. While they do this, they carry pollen from flower to flower. This helps the plant make seeds. Without bees, many plants could not reproduce. Without plants, bees would have no food. They need each other — this is called interdependence. If one living thing disappears from an ecosystem, others are affected. If all the rabbits vanished, foxes would have less food and their numbers would drop. The grass might grow too much with no rabbits eating it. A change in one part causes a ripple through the whole ecosystem.
