The Model for Scientific Writing

Scientific writing is not the same as storytelling. Its job is to communicate evidence clearly so that anyone — anywhere in the world — could read your work and understand exactly what you did and what your results mean. **The Structure** Most scientific write-ups follow a pattern called IMRaD. Each letter stands for a section: • **Introduction** — What question were you investigating, and why does it matter? State your here. A hypothesis is a specific, testable prediction about what you expect to happen. • **Method** — How did you carry out the investigation? Write this in the past tense, in enough detail that someone else could repeat it exactly. Avoid the word 'I'; instead write 'The solution was heated' rather than 'I heated the solution.' This is called , and it keeps the focus on what was done, not who did it. • **Results** — What did you observe and measure? Present data in tables or graphs and describe any patterns you notice. Do not explain or interpret here — just report what you saw. • **Discussion and Conclusion** — What do your results mean? Explain whether the evidence supports your hypothesis.
