A contains two or more substances that are physically combined but not chemically bonded. Because there is no chemical bond, you can use physical properties — such as particle size, magnetic behaviour, density, or boiling point — to pull the substances apart. Scientists call these methods separation techniques. **Filtration** uses a barrier with tiny holes (a filter) to separate an solid from a liquid. The liquid passes through the holes; the solid cannot. Example: removing sand from muddy water using filter paper. **Evaporation** removes a liquid from a solution by heating it until the liquid turns to gas and escapes, leaving the dissolved solid behind. Example: sea water is evaporated in large, flat salt pans to collect sea salt. **Distillation** goes a step further than evaporation: the vapour (gas) is collected and cooled so it condenses back into a pure liquid. This separates two liquids with different boiling points, or a dissolved solid from its . Example: producing pure (distilled) water from salt water. **Crystallisation** is a controlled form of evaporation where the solution is cooled slowly, causing the dissolved solid to form well-shaped crystals rather than a powder. Example: copper sulfate crystals grown in a school lab. **Magnetic separation** uses a magnet to attract magnetic materials (iron, nickel, cobalt) away from non-magnetic ones.
