Your Body's Superhighway: The Nervous System

Imagine someone suddenly throws a ball at your face. Before you even think, your arms fly up to block it. How did your body react so fast — faster than conscious thought? Your nervous system made that happen in a fraction of a second. In this lesson you will find out how billions of microscopic cells form a living communication network that controls almost everything you do.

The nervous system is your body's communication and control network. It has two main divisions. **The Central Nervous System (CNS)** is made up of the brain and the spinal cord. The brain is the control centre — it processes information and makes decisions. The spinal cord is a thick bundle of nerve fibres that runs down through your backbone. It acts like a high-speed cable linking the brain to the rest of the body. **The Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)** is the network of nerves that branches out from the spinal cord to every part of your body — your skin, muscles, organs, and senses. 'Peripheral' means 'around the edges', so think of the PNS as all the wiring that connects the central hub to every room in a building. **Neurons — the messenger cells** The nervous system is built from specialised cells called neurons. A neuron has a cell body, a long fibre called an axon that carries signals away, and shorter branching fibres called dendrites that receive signals from neighbouring neurons. Signals pass from one neuron to the next across tiny gaps called synapses. A chemical messenger crosses the synapse and triggers the next neuron to fire. **How a signal travels: Stimulus → Receptor → CNS → Effector → Response** When something in your environment changes, your sense organs detect it. That change is called a stimulus. Receptor cells in your sense organs convert the stimulus into an electrical nerve signal. The signal races along sensory neurons to the CNS, where the brain (or spinal cord in a reflex) processes the information. The brain then sends instructions along motor neurons to effectors — muscles or glands — which produce the response. **Voluntary responses vs. Reflex arcs** Most actions involve the brain: you see a friend, decide to wave, and your arm moves. This is a voluntary response and takes a little longer because the signal must reach the brain. A reflex arc bypasses the brain. When you touch something painfully hot, the signal travels to the spinal cord, which sends an immediate 'pull away!' command back to your arm — all before the brain has even registered pain. Reflex arcs are faster because they take a shorter route, and they protect you from injury.
