Where Does Light Come From?

Imagine you walk into a room and someone switches off every single light. It is completely dark. You cannot see anything at all. Now someone strikes a match — and suddenly a tiny flame pushes the darkness back. How did that tiny flame do that? Today you are going to find out. Light has to come from somewhere, and not every bright-looking thing actually makes its own light. Can you already think of two things that give off light?

A light source is any object that makes its own light. It produces light energy by itself — it does not need another object to shine light on it first. The Sun is the most important light source for life on Earth. It produces light through a process deep inside it, releasing huge amounts of energy. You can feel that energy as heat, and you can see it as light. Light sources can be natural or artificial. Natural light sources exist in nature without humans making them. Artificial light sources are ones that humans have invented and built. Natural sources include the Sun, stars, lightning, and fire (such as a bonfire or a candle flame). Artificial sources include light bulbs, torches, phone screens, and neon signs. Here is the tricky part: not everything bright is a light source. The Moon looks very bright in the night sky, but the Moon does not make its own light. It reflects sunlight — like a mirror bouncing light back at you. Reflected light means the light started somewhere else. Because the Moon only reflects light, it is NOT a light source. A good test: ask yourself, 'Would this object still look bright if no other light shone on it?' If yes, it is a source. If no, it is just reflecting light from somewhere else.
