How Water Travels: The Four Stages

Water moves in a never-ending loop called the . It has four main stages. **Stage 1 — ** The sun warms water in oceans, lakes, rivers, and puddles. This heat turns liquid water into an invisible gas called . The vapour floats upward into the air. You cannot see it, but it is there — just like the steam that rises from a hot drink. **Stage 2 — ** High up in the sky, the air is much colder. When water vapour rises and cools down, it turns back into tiny liquid water droplets. These droplets cluster together around tiny bits of dust to make clouds. This change from gas to liquid is called condensation. A good example you can see at home: water droplets that form on a cold glass on a warm day. **Stage 3 — ** Cloud droplets join together and get heavier. When they are too heavy to stay in the air, they fall back to Earth as precipitation. Precipitation is any water that falls from clouds — it can be rain, snow, sleet, or hail, depending on how cold the air is. **Stage 4 — ** Water that falls on land collects in rivers, lakes, and oceans. Some soaks into the ground. From these stores, the sun warms the water again — and the whole cycle begins once more. The water cycle is powered by energy from the sun and pulled downward by gravity.
