For this to happen, the seed needs three things: water, warmth, and oxygen from the air. It does NOT need sunlight yet. The seed coat splits open, a tiny root pushes downward into the soil, and a small shoot pushes upward toward the light. This young plant is called a seedling. **Stage 3 — Adult plant** The seedling keeps growing. Its leaves spread out and use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide from the air to make food. This process is called . The plant grows flowers, which are its reproductive parts — the parts used to make new seeds. **Stage 4 — and seed production** For a flowering plant to make seeds, (a fine, dusty powder made in the flower) must travel from one flower to another. Wind, bees, butterflies, and other insects carry pollen between flowers. This is called pollination. Once a flower is pollinated, it can grow fruit or a seed case around the new seeds. The seeds are then spread — by wind, animals, or water — to new places.
