Imagine you had to spend a whole week outside with no tent, no food from home, and no water bottle. Where would you choose to stay — a snowy mountain, a scorching desert, or a leafy forest? Think about what you would need: food, water, shelter, and warmth. Living things face exactly this challenge every single day! Every animal and plant lives in a place that gives it what it needs to survive.

A habitat is the natural place where a living thing lives and finds everything it needs to survive. Think of it as a living thing's home address in nature. Every living thing has four basic needs: food, water, shelter, and the right temperature. A good habitat provides all of these. If even one need is missing, the living thing cannot survive there. Let's look at a real example you could visit in a park or garden: a pond. A pond habitat is full of water, underwater plants, small insects, and algae (tiny green plants). A frog is perfectly suited to a pond. Its skin stays moist in the water. It catches insects for food. It lays its eggs safely in the water. The pond meets every one of the frog's needs. Now think about a cactus. It lives in a desert habitat where there is very little rain and lots of sunshine. The cactus stores water inside its thick stem and has spines instead of leaves to stop water escaping. The desert meets the cactus's needs — plenty of sun and the dry conditions it is built for. Different living things are suited — meaning well matched — to different habitats. A frog could not survive in a desert because it would dry out. A cactus would rot in a pond. This matching of living things to their habitats is one of the most important ideas in science.
