Can Religion Ever Justify Violence?

Yet the same traditions that inspired those wars also produced some of the most committed peacemakers who ever lived — people like Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., and Malala Yousafzai. **The core tension** Almost every major world religion contains teachings that promote peace, compassion, and the sanctity of human life. Buddhism teaches ahimsa — non-harm to all living beings. Islam opens every chapter of the Qur'an with 'In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.' Christianity teaches 'love your neighbour.' Judaism commands tikkun olam — repairing the world. Hinduism, Sikhism, and most other traditions hold similar values at their heart. Yet history also shows that violence has repeatedly been carried out by people who claimed religious authority or motivation. The Crusades, certain colonial wars, and some modern conflicts have all been framed in religious language. So how do we make sense of this tension? **Pacifism** Pacifism is the belief that violence is always wrong and that conflicts must be resolved peacefully. Many religious believers are pacifists. Quakers (a Christian group) and Jains are well-known examples. They argue that since life is sacred — created by or precious to God — no cause can justify taking it. Gandhi drew on his Hindu faith and the concept of ahimsa to lead a non-violent independence movement in India. **Just War Theory** Not all religious thinkers agree with pacifism. Just War Theory argues that violence can be morally justified, but only when very strict conditions are met.
