Companion summary

Have you ever wondered whether anything is truly real, or if your senses could be tricking you right now? Philosophers ask exactly these questions — and their ideas shape how scientists, judges, and leaders make decisions every day. Socrates, one of history's greatest thinkers, was so committed to honest questioning that he made it his entire life's work. When you finish, try picking one everyday belief you hold and asking yourself: how do I actually know that is true?

What Kind of Question Is This?

Consider these two questions: 'How many planets are in our solar system?' and 'Is it ever right to break a rule to help someone?' The first question has a definite answer you can look up. The second one is different — people can disagree, and both sides can have good reasons. That second type of question is what philosophers live for. Before moving on, think about which of the following feels harder to answer, and why.
