How Do We Decide What Is Right? Ethics and Moral Choices

Imagine you find a wallet on the street. It contains a large amount of cash and an ID card. You are saving up for something you desperately need, and no one saw you pick it up. What do you do — and, more importantly, WHY? Most people would agree you should return it. But what makes that the 'right' choice? Is it because you'd feel guilty if you kept it? Because rules say stealing is wrong? Because you'd want someone to return your wallet? Or because keeping it would harm the owner? The fact that you can give several different reasons for the same decision shows that ethics — the study of right and wrong — is more complicated than it first appears.

Ethics is the branch of philosophy that asks: what is right, what is wrong, and how should we act? Every culture and religion engages with these questions, and thinkers across history have developed different frameworks — structured ways of thinking — to help answer them. **Framework 1 — Consequences (Consequentialism)** This approach says the right action is the one that produces the best outcome for the greatest number of people. The philosopher Jeremy Bentham called this the greatest happiness principle. If you return the wallet, the owner's relief far outweighs your small disappointment — so returning it is right because the consequences are better overall. **Framework 2 — Duties and Rules (Deontology)** The philosopher Immanuel Kant argued that some actions are right or wrong in themselves, regardless of outcomes. We have duties — such as the duty not to steal — that must be followed even when breaking them might seem to produce a better result. On this view, keeping the wallet is wrong because theft violates a universal rule: do not take what belongs to someone else. **Framework 3 — Virtue and Character** This approach, rooted in ancient Greek philosophy and also found in many religious traditions, asks: what would a person of good character do? Virtues are positive character traits — honesty, courage, compassion, fairness. A virtuous person returns the wallet not because of a rule, but because honesty is part of who they are. **Framework 4 — The Golden Rule** Found in Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and many other worldviews, the Golden Rule states: treat others as you would wish to be treated. This principle crosses religious and cultural boundaries and provides a widely shared starting point for ethical decision-making. **Why Does This Matter?** Real-world dilemmas are rarely simple. Different frameworks can lead to the same decision (as with the wallet) or to conflicting ones. Understanding the reasoning behind each approach helps you think clearly, argue fairly, and respect the views of others — even when you disagree.
