Companion summary

Have you ever noticed that almost every culture on Earth shares one powerful idea about how to treat people? When you understand this shared idea, you can connect with anyone — even someone from a completely different background. A Buddhist text, the Bible, the Quran, and ancient Confucian writings all say something like: treat others the way you want to be treated. When you finish, try spotting moments in your day where you already live out this idea without even thinking about it.

Have You Ever Wished Someone Had Been Kinder?

Think about a time when someone was unkind to you — maybe they left you out, said something hurtful, or took something without asking. Now flip it around: how did you wish they had treated you instead? Here is something fascinating: people all over the world, from ancient times right up to today, came up with almost exactly the same answer to that question — and they wrote it down in their own languages and traditions. It is sometimes called the Golden Rule.

💭 Think about this
