Being Good Without a God: Exploring Humanism

Imagine you find a wallet on the ground. It is full of money and belongs to a stranger. Nobody is watching you. What would you do — and why? Some people might say they do the right thing because their religion teaches them to. But what if someone has no religion at all? Can they still choose to be kind and honest? Humanism is a way of thinking about life. Humanists believe that human beings are responsible for making the world a better place. They do not follow a god or religious book to guide their choices. Instead, they use two important tools: reason and empathy. Reason means thinking carefully about a problem and working out what makes sense. Empathy means imagining how other people feel. A Humanist asks: 'Would this action hurt anyone? Would it help people live happier, more fulfilling lives?' If the answer is yes to the second question and no to the first, it is probably a good action. Humanists believe that this one life is precious because there is no afterlife in their worldview. That makes living well and treating others kindly even more important. Humanism is called a secular worldview. Secular means it is not based on religion. There are Humanist organisations in many countries, and people who call themselves Humanists come from all over the world. Here is a key Humanist idea: the Golden Rule. It says, 'Treat others as you would like to be treated yourself.' Many religions share this idea too, but Humanists arrive at it through reason and empathy rather than religious teaching. Humanists care about things like fairness, honesty, freedom, and the well-being of all people and animals. They use science to understand the world, and they believe people are naturally capable of being moral — that means knowing right from wrong — without needing a god to tell them.
