Light, Stories, and Sacred Words: The Vedas and Diwali

Imagine every light in your home goes out at night. No lamps, no screens — just darkness. Now picture millions of tiny flames flickering in windows and doorways across a whole country. Why might people use light to celebrate something important? Think about what light makes you feel.

Hinduism is one of the world's oldest religions. It began in the region that is now India and Nepal thousands of years ago. Hindus believe in one ultimate spirit, called Brahman, which flows through everything. They also honour many deities — divine beings who each show a different quality of Brahman. The Vedas are the oldest and most sacred texts in Hinduism. The word 'Veda' comes from Sanskrit and means 'knowledge'. There are four Vedas: the Rigveda, Samaveda, Yajurveda, and Atharvaveda. Hindus believe these texts were not written by people — instead, ancient holy teachers called rishis heard the sacred knowledge directly and passed it on by speaking it aloud for thousands of years before it was ever written down. This is why the Vedas are sometimes called 'sruti', meaning 'that which is heard'. The Vedas contain hymns, prayers, and teachings about how to live well and understand the world. Diwali is one of the most important Hindu festivals. Its name comes from a Sanskrit word meaning 'row of lights'. It is sometimes called the Festival of Lights. Diwali usually falls in October or November and lasts for five days. One of the most important stories linked to Diwali tells of Rama, a prince who is an avatar — a form of the god Vishnu — and his wife Sita. Rama defeats the demon king Ravana, who stands for evil, and then returns home after fourteen years away. People lit lamps to guide Rama and Sita home through the dark. This story comes from a long Hindu poem called the Ramayana. During Diwali, Hindus light small clay oil lamps called diyas. They clean and decorate their homes, share sweets, set off fireworks, and make colourful floor patterns called rangoli. Families also worship Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and good fortune, asking her to bless their homes. The central message of Diwali is that light defeats darkness and good overcomes evil. This idea runs through the Vedas too — the hymns often ask the gods for light, protection, and goodness.
