What Is Sikhism?

Sikhism is one of the world's major religions, with about 25–30 million followers worldwide. Its followers are called Sikhs. Sikhism began in the Punjab region of South Asia — an area that is now split between India and Pakistan — around 500 years ago. The founder of Sikhism was Nanak, who was born in 1469 CE. A guru is a spiritual teacher or guide. Guru Nanak taught that there is one God, and that all people are equal, no matter where they come from or what they look like. After Guru Nanak, nine more Gurus continued to teach and lead the Sikh community. Together, the ten Gurus shaped the Sikh faith. The holy scripture of Sikhism is called the . Sikhs treat it with great respect — almost like a living Guru. It contains hymns and teachings from the Sikh Gurus and other holy figures. Sikhs worship in a building called a , which means 'gateway to the Guru'. The Gurdwara is open to everyone, whatever their background. Inside, there is always a — a free community kitchen where anyone can eat a meal together as equals.
