Hinduism: A World of Wonder

Imagine you are given a torch and told to find the same source of light inside a hall of a thousand mirrors. Every mirror shows a different reflection, but they all come from one single flame. Keep that picture in your mind — it will help you understand one of the most important ideas in Hinduism. Before you start, think about this: do you already know the name of any Hindu festivals, gods, or traditions? Jot down or say out loud anything that comes to mind.

Hinduism is one of the world's oldest religions. It began in South Asia, mainly in the region we now call India, more than 4,000 years ago. Today, around one billion people practise Hinduism across the world. Hindus believe in one supreme, eternal force called Brahman. Brahman is not a person — it is the spiritual energy that fills everything in the universe. Think of Brahman like the flame in the mirror hall: one true source behind everything you can see. To help people understand Brahman, Hindus worship many gods and goddesses. Each one represents a different quality of Brahman. The three most important gods are often called the Trimurti. Brahma is the creator — he made the universe. Vishnu is the preserver — he protects and keeps balance in the world. Shiva is the transformer — he brings endings so that new beginnings can follow. Other widely loved gods include Ganesha, the elephant-headed god of wisdom and new starts, and Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and good fortune. Hindus also believe in dharma, which means living a good and righteous life — doing what is right and treating others fairly. They believe in karma, the idea that kind actions lead to good outcomes and harmful actions lead to difficult ones. Many Hindus also believe in reincarnation — the idea that after death, a person's soul is reborn into a new life. The sacred texts of Hinduism are called the Vedas. These are among the oldest religious writings in the world. Another important text is the Bhagavad Gita, which tells the story of a hero called Arjuna and his conversation with the god Vishnu in the form of Krishna. The Hindu place of worship is called a mandir. Inside a mandir there are beautiful statues of gods called murtis. Worshippers bring offerings of flowers, food, and light in a ceremony called puja. Hindus can also practise puja at home at a small family shrine. Hinduism has many joyful festivals. Diwali, the Festival of Lights, celebrates the victory of light over darkness. Holi is a festival of colour and the arrival of spring.
