Where Does Your Pay Actually Go? Taxes, Payslips and Tips Explained

Imagine you get a Saturday job and your employer tells you: 'You'll earn £200 this month.' When your first pay arrives, only £168 lands in your bank account. Where did £32 go? You haven't been cheated — but something important happened between earning the money and receiving it. Think about this: who pays for roads, hospitals, schools, and emergency services? Before we dive in, jot down one guess about where that missing £32 might have gone.

**What is a payslip?** A payslip is a document your employer gives you every time you are paid. It shows exactly what you earned and what was taken away before the money reached you. Most payslips show the same key sections: gross pay, deductions, and net pay. **Gross pay** is your total earnings before anything is removed — your hourly rate multiplied by the hours you worked, plus any bonuses. **Deductions** are amounts subtracted from your gross pay. The two main deductions for most workers are income tax and National Insurance contributions. **Income tax** is a percentage of your earnings that you pay to the government. Governments use this money to fund public services — things like the NHS, schools, roads, and the police. In the UK, everyone has a tax-free personal allowance (a set amount you can earn each year before tax applies). In 2024–25 this is £12,570 per year. Earnings above that are taxed at increasing rates — the more you earn, the higher the rate on the extra income. **National Insurance (NI)** is a separate contribution that funds state benefits such as the State Pension and certain welfare payments. Employees pay NI on their earnings above a threshold, and employers also make their own NI contribution on top of paying your wages. **Net pay** is what is left after all deductions. This is sometimes called take-home pay — the amount that actually reaches your bank account. **Tips** A tip (also called a gratuity) is extra money a customer gives a worker to say 'thank you' for good service. Tips are common in restaurants, hotels, and taxi services. Importantly, tips count as income, so they may be subject to tax just like regular wages. How tips are shared varies: some workplaces pool all tips and split them equally among the team (called a tronc system); others let staff keep the tips they personally receive. Since 2024, UK law requires employers to pass all tips on to workers rather than keeping them.
