Rights and Responsibilities: Two Sides of the Same Coin

Imagine your school has one basketball court. Everyone has the right to use it — but at break time, one group takes over the whole court for the entire hour, every single day, and refuses to share. Other students never get a turn. Something feels wrong here, but why exactly? Is anyone breaking a law? Not necessarily. Yet most people sense that something unfair is happening. Hold that feeling in your mind. Today's lesson will give you the language and reasoning to explain precisely what is going wrong — and why rights alone are never the whole story.

A right is something you are entitled to — a freedom or protection that belongs to you as a person. Rights are not gifts that can be taken away on a whim; many of them are recognised in international agreements. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), agreed in 1989, lists rights that every child in the world should have: the right to education, to healthcare, to be heard, and to be safe, among many others. A responsibility is a duty — something you are expected to do or avoid in order to protect the wellbeing of others and yourself. Responsibilities can be legal (written in law) or moral (based on shared values of fairness and care). The crucial insight is this: rights and responsibilities are two sides of the same coin. They are inseparable. When you hold a right, two things follow automatically. First, other people have a responsibility not to violate that right. Second, you have a responsibility to exercise your right in a way that does not damage the rights of others. This is sometimes called the limitation principle: your rights end where another person's rights begin. Take the right to free expression — the right to share your opinions. You genuinely have this right. But it comes with the responsibility not to use your words to harm, bully, or discriminate against others. The right does not disappear, but it has a clear boundary set by other people's right to dignity and safety. Rights and responsibilities also operate at different levels. As an individual, you have personal responsibilities — keeping your word, treating others with respect. As part of a community (a school, a neighbourhood, a country), you share collective responsibilities — following agreed rules, paying taxes when you are an adult, voting in elections. Societies function when people honour both levels. Finally, not everyone is able to exercise their rights equally. Barriers such as poverty, discrimination, or disability can prevent people from accessing rights they are entitled to. Recognising this is itself part of being a responsible global citizen — it is a responsibility to notice injustice and, where possible, act to reduce it.
