What Is Prejudice — and Why Does It Hurt?

The opinion is based on a group they belong to — such as their race, religion, gender, disability, or family background — not on who they actually are as a person. Think of it like judging a book by its cover. You have not read a single page, but you have already decided it is boring. That is unfair to the book — and prejudice is unfair to the person. Prejudice can show up in words, actions, or even silence. For example: • Saying something unkind about someone's background. • Leaving someone out of a game because of how they look. • Laughing along when someone tells a mean joke about a group of people. All of these things can make the person on the receiving end feel ashamed, lonely, and like they do not belong. That is why prejudice is harmful — it damages people's feelings and their confidence. Speaking up means saying or doing something to challenge prejudice when you see or hear it. You do not have to shout or argue. Speaking up can look like: • Saying calmly, 'That comment is not fair — everyone deserves to be treated with respect.' • Walking over to stand next to the person being left out. • Telling a trusted adult, such as a teacher or parent, what you witnessed. • Refusing to laugh at a joke that puts a group of people down.
