Companion summary

Have you ever noticed your chest pounding after a hard sprint, like your heart is trying to escape? Elite athletes train specifically to make their heart stronger, pumping more blood with every single beat. Your heart beats around 100,000 times a day, delivering oxygen to every muscle keeping you moving. When you finish, try timing your pulse before and after exercise — notice how quickly it recovers.

Feel Your Engine Running

Feel Your Engine Running

Find your pulse. Press two fingertips lightly on the inside of your wrist, just below your thumb. Count the beats you feel in 15 seconds, then multiply by 4. That number is your resting heart rate in beats per minute (bpm). Now do 30 star jumps as fast as you can. Find your pulse again and recalculate your bpm. What changed — and why do you think that happened?

💭 Think about this

Your heart rate just went up after exercise. What do you think your muscles needed more of that caused this change?
