Companion summary

Have you ever wondered why your legs feel like jelly after sprinting, but your arms stay fine? Every footballer, swimmer, and dancer relies on knowing which muscles to train and protect to perform their best. Your quadriceps alone contain four separate muscles working together just to straighten your knee — teamwork at a microscopic level. When you finish, try noticing which muscles feel warm during your next PE session and see if you can name them.

Feel It Working

Feel It Working

Press your fingertips gently into the front of your upper arm. Now slowly bend your elbow, bringing your hand toward your shoulder. Feel that bulge? That is a muscle shortening and hardening as it pulls your forearm upward. Now straighten your arm again — the bulge disappears. Something is definitely going on under your skin. What exactly? Your body contains more than 600 muscles, but a small set of major muscle groups does most of the heavy lifting in sport and exercise. Today you are going to find out exactly how they work.
