Feel Your Engine Running

Feel Your Engine Running

Find your pulse right now — press two fingertips gently on the inside of your wrist or the side of your neck. Count the beats for 15 seconds, then multiply by 4. That number is your resting heart rate in beats per minute (bpm). Most young people at rest sit between 60 and 100 bpm. Now imagine sprinting up a flight of stairs. Your heart would be hammering — maybe 160 or 170 bpm. Why does it change so dramatically? That change is at the very heart of today's lesson.

💭 Think about this

After 30 seconds of star jumps, do you think your breathing rate will double, triple, or stay roughly the same as when you are sitting still? Make a prediction and explain your reasoning.
