Play It Right: Mastering the Rules of Football

Imagine a football match with no rules at all. Players could pick up the ball, push opponents out of the way, and score in any goal they liked. Would it still be a game? Would it even be enjoyable? Rules are not there to limit you — they are what make the sport possible. Every rule in football solves a real problem: keeping the game fair, keeping players safe, and keeping the contest meaningful. Before we dive in, think about the last match you watched or played.

Association football is governed by 17 Laws of the Game, maintained by IFAB (the International Football Association Board). You do not need to memorise all 17 right now, but you do need to understand the core rules that shape every match. **The Objective** Each team tries to score by getting the ball into the opponent's goal. The team with the most goals at the end of full time wins. If scores are level, the result is a draw. **Players and Positions** Each team fields eleven players, including one goalkeeper. The goalkeeper is the only player allowed to handle the ball with their hands or arms — but only inside their own penalty area. **The Match** A standard match consists of two halves of 45 minutes each, with a 15-minute half-time interval. The referee may add extra time at the end of each half to compensate for stoppages — this is called injury time or stoppage time. **Offside** A player is in an offside position if, at the moment the ball is played to them by a teammate, they are closer to the opponent's goal line than both the ball and the second-to-last defender (usually the last outfield player). Being offside is only an offence if the player is actively involved in play — simply standing in an offside position is not a foul unless they receive or influence the ball. The restart is an indirect free kick to the opposing team. **Fouls and Misconduct** A foul occurs when a player makes illegal contact with an opponent — for example, kicking, tripping, pushing, or handling the ball deliberately (except the goalkeeper in their area). The restart after a foul is a direct free kick, meaning the taker can shoot directly at goal. If a foul occurs inside the fouling team's penalty area, the opposing team is awarded a penalty kick — a one-on-one shot from the penalty spot, 11 metres from goal. The referee can also caution a player with a yellow card for persistent fouling, time-wasting, or unsporting behaviour. Two yellow cards in the same match result in a red card and the player must leave the field. A red card can also be shown directly for serious foul play or violent conduct. **Restarts** When the ball goes out of play, the match restarts in a specific way depending on who last touched it and where it went: - *Throw-in*: If the ball crosses a touchline (the long side of the pitch), the team that did not touch it last takes a throw-in. Both feet must remain on or behind the touchline, and the ball must be thrown with both hands from behind the head. - *Goal kick*: If the attacking team sends the ball over the opponent's goal line (without scoring), the defending team takes a goal kick from inside their goal area. - *Corner kick*: If the defending team sends the ball over their own goal line (without scoring), the attacking team takes a corner kick from the corner arc. **The Goalkeeper Rules** The goalkeeper may not hold the ball for more than six seconds. If a teammate deliberately passes the ball back to the goalkeeper using their foot, the goalkeeper cannot pick it up — they must use their feet. Breaking these rules results in an indirect free kick.
