Be the Choreographer: Build Your Own Dance

Think about your favourite song. Do you ever nod your head, tap your foot, or make the same move every time it plays? Without knowing it, you have already started choreographing! Every time you choose a movement to go with music, you are making a choreography decision. Today you are going to learn how to do that on purpose — like a real dance-maker.

Choreography means planning and arranging movements to make a dance. A choreographer is the person who designs a dance — just like an architect designs a building. You can be a choreographer too! Every dance, big or small, uses three key building blocks: **1. The Motif** A motif is a short, repeated movement idea — like a signature move. It could be a jump, a spin, or a reaching arm. Your motif is the heart of your dance. Everything else grows from it. **2. Repetition** Repetition means doing your motif more than once. When a movement comes back, the audience recognises it. It makes the dance feel whole and connected. You can repeat the exact same move, or change it slightly — perhaps make it bigger, smaller, faster, or slower. **3. Transition** A transition is how you move from one part of your dance to the next. It could be a step, a turn, or a smooth slide. Good transitions link your movements so the dance flows, rather than stopping and starting. **Putting it together: Beginning, Middle, End** A simple dance structure has three parts. The beginning introduces your motif. The middle develops it — you might repeat it and change something about it. The end brings your dance to a clear finish, called a 'freeze' or a 'held shape'. This three-part plan is called ABA structure when the end echoes the beginning. **Worked Example** Imagine your motif is a slow arm sweep to the right. - Beginning: You do the arm sweep twice, facing the front. - Middle: You repeat the sweep, but this time you turn in a full circle while doing it — that is a developed repetition. - Transition: You take three slow steps to the left to move into your final position. - End: You do the original arm sweep once more and freeze with your arms wide. You have just planned a complete mini dance using all three building blocks!
