Five Techniques That Protect Your Marks

**1. Read the question fully before you write anything.** Underline key information and note what the question is actually asking. Many marks are lost by answering a slightly different question — for example, giving an area when the question asks for a perimeter. **2. Show every step of your working.** Examiners award (marks given for correct steps, even if the final answer is wrong). If you work silently in your head and write only the answer, a single slip costs you everything. Write each step on a new line and label it if it helps. **3. Write your units and interpret your answer.** If a question is about money, write £. If it asks for area, write cm². A bare number is often an incomplete answer. Some mark schemes deduct a mark for a missing unit. **4. Use a checking strategy.** Two reliable checks: • ** — if you added, subtract your answer from one of the original numbers to see if you get the other back. • *Estimate first, calculate second* — round numbers to 1 (the first non-zero digit) before you start, so you have a rough target. If your answer is wildly different from your estimate, recalculate. **5. Step 5 — Write the unit: 31.08 cm². Without 'cm²', some mark schemes penalise. Result: every available mark is protected — even if one arithmetic line had a slip, the method earns credit.
