Sorting with Circles: Mastering Venn Diagrams

Imagine you are sorting a pile of numbers into two boxes. Box A holds multiples of 2. Box B holds multiples of 3. You pick up the number 6. Which box does it go in? It fits both — but you only have two separate boxes. This is the problem Venn diagrams solve beautifully. They give every element exactly the right home, even when it belongs to more than one group.

A Venn diagram uses overlapping circles drawn inside a rectangle to sort items into groups. The rectangle represents the universal set — written ξ (the Greek letter xi) — which contains every item being considered. Each circle represents one set, labelled with a capital letter such as A or B. The four regions of a two-circle Venn diagram each have a precise meaning: • Only in A — items that belong to A but NOT to B. • Only in B — items that belong to B but NOT to A. • The intersection (A ∩ B) — the overlapping area where items belong to BOTH A and B. The symbol ∩ means 'and' or 'overlap'. • Outside both circles — items in the universal set that belong to neither A nor B. The union of A and B, written A ∪ B, means everything inside either circle (or both). The symbol ∪ means 'or'. When you read a Venn diagram, be careful: numbers written in the intersection are NOT counted again in the 'only A' or 'only B' sections. Each item appears exactly once. To find the total number of elements in A ∪ B, add the three inner regions: |A only| + |A ∩ B| + |B only| Do NOT double-count the intersection.
