Mirror, Slide, Turn: Mastering Transformations
For grown-ups
Companion summary
Have you ever noticed how a snowflake looks exactly the same after you rotate it? Architects and game designers use transformations every day to flip, slide, and spin shapes perfectly into place. Here is something cool: a single point on a grid can travel to a completely new location just by following a simple rule. When you feel ready, try spotting reflections in everyday logos around you.
Warm-Up: Spot the Odd One Out
Warm-Up: Spot the Odd One Out
Look at these four words: slide, flip, turn, grow. Three of them describe ways to move a shape without changing its size. One does not belong. Which word is the odd one out, and why? Think for 30 seconds before reading on. The odd one out is 'grow', because sliding, flipping, and turning a shape keep its size and shape exactly the same. Mathematicians call these moves transformations. Today you will learn the precise names and rules for three types: translation (slide), reflection (flip), and rotation (turn).

Can you think of a real-life object that has been reflected, rotated, or translated? Where do you see transformations around you every day?
