Mind Your Manners — Everywhere: Cross-Cultural Etiquette

Imagine you visit a friend's home in another country. You arrive on time — in fact, you arrive a couple of minutes early because you want to make a good impression. Your host opens the door looking slightly flustered. You've already made an awkward mistake, and you don't even know it yet. In many cultures across the Middle East, Latin America, and parts of Africa, arriving early is considered rude — hosts expect guests to arrive 15–30 minutes after the stated time. The invitation time is a rough guide, not a deadline. In contrast, in Germany, Switzerland, or Japan, arriving even a few minutes late can cause genuine offence. Same action. Completely different meanings. That's the puzzle at the heart of cross-cultural etiquette.
