The Building Blocks of a Spanish Opinion Piece

A short opinion piece in Spanish has three parts, just like in English: an opening statement, supporting reasons, and a closing summary. The trick is knowing which Spanish phrases to use at each stage. **1. Opening — State your opinion clearly** Do not just dive into facts. Announce your view immediately. Use one of these openers: • En mi opinión, … (In my opinion, …) • Creo que … (I believe that …) • Desde mi punto de vista, … (From my point of view, …) • Estoy convencido/a de que … (I am convinced that …) Choose one and finish the sentence with your main claim. **2. Middle — Give reasons and develop them** Each reason needs a connective to link your ideas and make your argument flow smoothly. Essential connectives: • porque (because) • además (furthermore / also) • sin embargo (however) — use this to acknowledge the other side fairly • por eso (therefore) • por ejemplo (for example) Aim for two or three reasons. One sentence per reason is enough at this level. If you include sin embargo to show the opposing view, follow it with pero (but) to swing back to your own side. **3. Closing — Reinforce your view** End with a summary phrase: • En conclusión, … (In conclusion, …) • Por todo esto, creo que … (For all these reasons, I believe that …) • En resumen, … (In summary, …) **Tone and ** An opinion piece is formal — avoid slang. Use complete sentences. Adjectives must agree with the noun they describe in Spanish (e.g., una idea buena, unas ideas buenas).
