Unlock the Present: Spanish Verbs Come Alive

Imagine you want to text a friend in Spanish to say what you are doing at this exact moment — eating lunch, listening to music, or writing a story. How do you change a verb to show something is happening now? In English, you might say 'I eat' or 'I am eating'. In Spanish, one single present-tense form covers both meanings. That's elegant — and once you crack the pattern, you can unlock hundreds of verbs at once. Think about it: how many actions have you done today before reading this? You're about to be able to describe every one of them in Spanish.

Spanish verbs in their base form — called the infinitive — always end in -ar, -er, or -ir. For example: hablar (to speak), comer (to eat), vivir (to live). To use a verb in the present tense, you follow two steps: (1) remove the infinitive ending to find the stem, and (2) add the correct ending for the subject pronoun. Spotting this overlap makes the system much easier to remember. The present tense in Spanish expresses actions that happen regularly ('I speak Spanish every day'), actions happening right now ('She is eating lunch'), and general truths ('We live in a city'). One form, three uses — very efficient!
