Today or Tomorrow? Talking About Time in Spanish

Imagine your friend says: 'We are going to the park!' You want to know — is it right now, or do you have to wait until the next day? That little detail changes everything! In English, you use the words 'today' and 'tomorrow' to make it clear. Spanish speakers do exactly the same thing — they just use different words. Can you guess what those words might sound like?

In Spanish, the word for 'today' is hoy. It is short and simple — just three letters. Say it out loud: 'oy' (the 'h' is silent in Spanish, so it sounds like the English exclamation 'oy!'). The word for 'tomorrow' is mañana. It has a special letter — ñ — which makes a 'ny' sound, like the 'ny' in 'canyon'. So mañana sounds like 'man-YAH-nah'. These two words go at the beginning of a sentence, or right before the verb (the action word). For example: Hoy como pizza. That means 'Today I eat pizza.' Mañana como pasta. That means 'Tomorrow I eat pasta.' Notice how hoy and mañana slot into exactly the same place in the sentence — just like 'today' and 'tomorrow' do in English. You can use them with almost any activity. Hoy juego fútbol means 'Today I play football.' Mañana juego fútbol means 'Tomorrow I play football.' The only thing that changes is the time word at the start!
