The Building Blocks: HTML Tags and Page Structure

stands for HyperText Markup Language. It is the language browsers use to display content on screen. HTML does not make things look pretty by itself — it tells the browser what each piece of content IS: a heading, a paragraph, a link, a picture. Every HTML instruction is called a . Most tags come in pairs: an opening tag, like <p>, and a closing tag, like </p>. The content sits between them. The forward slash in the closing tag is your signal that an ends there. Every valid webpage needs a skeleton — a set of required tags that wrap everything else: • <!DOCTYPE html> — tells the browser this file uses modern HTML (version 5). • <html> … </html> — the outer container for the whole page. • <head> … </head> — holds information ABOUT the page that visitors do not see, such as the page title shown in the browser tab. • <title> … </title> — goes inside <head> and sets the tab title. • <body> … </body> — holds everything visitors DO see: headings, text, images, links. Inside the body you use content tags: • <h1> to <h6> — headings, where h1 is the largest and most important. • <p> — a paragraph of text. • <a href="URL"> … </a> — a hyperlink; the href tells the browser where the link goes. • <img src="filename.jpg" alt="description"> — an image; src gives the file path, alt gives a text description for screen readers and when the image fails to load. means placing tags inside other tags. The rule is: close the inner tag before you close the outer tag. If you open <body> and then open <p>, you must close </p> before you close </body>.
