Building Blocks of Code: Mastering Functions

Imagine you are a baker who makes the same sponge cake every single day. Would you write out the full recipe from scratch each time — measure, mix, bake, cool — or would you keep one master recipe card and just follow it whenever you need it? Most experienced bakers keep the card. Now think about code. If you needed to calculate the area of a rectangle in ten different places in your program, would you type out the same calculation ten times? Or would it be smarter to write the calculation once and simply call it whenever you need it? That 'recipe card' idea is exactly what a function is in programming. Before you read on, jot down: what do you think a function might look like in code?

A function is a named, reusable block of code that performs one specific job. You define a function once, and then you can call (run) it as many times as you like from anywhere in your program. **Why use functions?** Functions make code shorter, easier to read, and easier to fix. If your calculation has a bug, you only fix it in one place — the function — and every call to that function is automatically corrected. This principle is sometimes called DRY: Don't Repeat Yourself. **The four key parts of a function:** 1. **Name** — a clear label that describes what the function does (e.g. `calculate_area`). 2. **Parameters** — the input values the function needs to do its job. They act like empty boxes waiting to be filled when the function is called. A function can have zero, one, or many parameters. 3. **Body** — the lines of code that run when the function is called. This is where the real work happens. 4. **Return value** — the result the function sends back to whoever called it. Not every function returns a value, but many do. **Calling a function** When you *call* a function, you write its name and provide *arguments* — the actual values that fill the parameter boxes for that specific call. Here is the general pattern in Python-style pseudocode: ``` def function_name(parameter): # body goes here return result ``` And calling it: ``` answer = function_name(argument) ``` **Scope — a quick note** Variables created inside a function normally only exist inside that function. This private space is called the function's *scope*. Once the function finishes, those variables disappear. This is useful because it stops different parts of your program accidentally interfering with each other.
