What Is a Function?

If your calculation has a bug, you only fix it in one place — the function — and every call to that function is automatically corrected. This principle is sometimes called DRY: Don't Repeat Yourself. **The four key parts of a function:** 1. **Name** — a clear label that describes what the function does (e.g. `calculate_area`). 2. **s** — the input values the function needs to do its job. They act like empty boxes waiting to be filled when the function is called. A function can have zero, one, or many parameters. 3. **Body** — the lines of code that run when the function is called. This is where the real work happens. 4. **Return value** — the result the function sends back to whoever called it. Not every function returns a value, but many do. **Calling a function** When you *call* a function, you write its name and provide *s* — the actual values that fill the parameter boxes for that specific .
