Turning Numbers into Pictures: Charts in a Spreadsheet

Imagine your teacher asks: 'What is your favourite fruit?' Twenty children answer. Some say apple, some say banana, some say mango. Now imagine reading all twenty answers written in a long list — tricky! But what if you could see it as a colourful picture in seconds? That is exactly what a chart does. Charts turn lists of numbers and words into easy-to-read pictures.

A spreadsheet is a program that stores information in rows and columns — like a grid of boxes. Each box is called a cell. You type numbers or words into the cells to make a table of data. A chart is a picture that a spreadsheet draws for you, using the numbers in your table. Charts make it easy to compare things at a glance. There are three types of chart you will meet most often: 1. Bar chart — Uses tall or wide bars (rectangles) to compare different groups. Great for questions like 'How many children chose each fruit?' 2. Pie chart — Looks like a circular pie cut into slices. Each slice shows how big a part is compared to the whole. Great for questions like 'What fraction of the class chose banana?' 3. Line graph — Joins dots with a line to show how something changes over time. Great for questions like 'How did the temperature change each day this week?' How to create a chart in a spreadsheet: Step 1 — Type your data into the cells. Put labels (like 'Apple', 'Banana') in one column and numbers in the next column. Step 2 — Select (highlight) all the cells that contain your data, including the labels. Step 3 — Click the Insert menu and choose Chart. Step 4 — Pick the chart type you want (bar, pie, or line). Step 5 — The spreadsheet draws the chart for you automatically! Always give your chart a title so anyone reading it knows what it is about.
