If This, Then That: Using Conditionals in Code
For grown-ups
Companion summary
Have you ever watched a door open only when someone waves their hand in front of it? Computers use the same "if this, then that" thinking to control traffic lights, games, and even your favourite apps. A single conditional in Scratch can make a character jump only when you press the spacebar — one line of logic, endless possibilities. When you feel confident, try chaining two conditions together and see what happens next.
Decisions, Decisions!
Decisions, Decisions!
Every day you make decisions based on a condition. Think about this: if it is raining, you take an umbrella. If it is NOT raining, you leave the umbrella at home. Your brain checks a condition — 'Is it raining?' — and then chooses what to do. Computers do exactly the same thing! They check a condition and pick an action based on whether it is true or false.
💭 Think about this
Can you think of one 'if … then …' decision you made today? For example: 'If my alarm rang, then I got up.'
