Type It, Change It, Save It!

Imagine you spend an hour writing a story on a computer. Then the power goes off — and everything disappears! Word processing skills help you write, change, and save your work safely. A word processor is a program that lets you type and edit text on a screen. You have probably seen one before — Microsoft Word, Google Docs, and LibreOffice Writer are all word processors.

When you open a word processor, you see a blank white page ready for your words. Here are the most important skills: **Typing and editing** Click on the page and start typing. If you make a mistake, press the Backspace key to delete the letter behind the cursor. The cursor is the blinking line that shows where your next letter will appear. You can also click anywhere in your text to move the cursor there and fix mistakes. **Selecting text** Before you can change text, you must select it. Click and drag your mouse over the words you want to change. They will turn blue (highlighted). You can also double-click a single word to select just that word. **Making text bold** Bold makes text thicker and darker so it stands out. Select your text, then press Ctrl + B (or Command + B on a Mac), or click the B button in the toolbar. **Making text italic** Italic tilts the text to the right. It is often used for book titles or to show something is special. Select your text, then press Ctrl + I (or Command + I), or click the I button. **Changing font size** Font size controls how big or small the letters are. Find the number in the toolbar (it usually says 12). Select your text, click that number, type a new one, and press Enter. A bigger number means bigger text. **Saving your document** Saving stores your work so it is not lost. Press Ctrl + S (or Command + S) at any time. The first time you save, you will be asked to choose a name and a place to store the file. Save often — do not wait until the end!
