Your Golden Rules for Online Safety

The internet is an amazing place to learn and have fun. But just like in the real world, there are rules to keep you safe. **Rule 1 — Keep private.** Personal information is any detail that could help a stranger find you in real life. This includes your full name, age, address, phone number, school name, and passwords. Never share these with anyone online unless a has said it is okay. **Rule 2 — Not everyone online is who they say they are.** Someone might say they are a child your age, but they could really be an adult. You cannot see or check who is really behind a screen. Treat s the same way you would treat a stranger in the street — be polite but careful. **Rule 3 — Think before you post or send.** Once something is posted or sent online, it is very hard to take back. Before you share a photo or a message, ask yourself: 'Would I be happy for my parent or teacher to see this?' If the answer is no, do not send it. **Rule 4 — Recognise things that feel wrong.** If a message, image, or website makes you feel worried, scared, or uncomfortable, that feeling is important. It is your brain telling you something might not be right. **Rule 5 — Tell a trusted adult straight away.** A trusted adult is someone you feel safe talking to — a parent, carer, or teacher.
